SONORAN100 ATHLETE GUIDE

The Sub-4 hour group plan

-If there is something special (ie bike bottles) you want at the feed station, you need to put it in a well marked bottle in my cooler by 6:15am so the volunteers can have it out for us on course. There will be lots of water bottles, coke and "ades" and a few bike bottles (with water) for the bottle refill/exchange.

-Arrive at the Apache Wash parking lot by 6am, do a little warmup. There are bathrooms.

-We will depart Apache Wash at 6:30am and head right/west on Sonoran with about a mile of warmup.

-We will get up to speed on the downhill and that will be the start of the Sonoran100

-Our first Western turnaround will come up pretty quick, just 2 miles after we begin.

-Approximately 6.5 miles after that we hit the Eastern turnaround feed/neutral zone for the first time.

-The "neutral zone" is the area between the two pullouts where we will have the speed a little lower and the wheels a little farther apart. Take a safer drink/bite, spin your legs, refill a torpedo, and then start to regroup and gradually get back up to speed.

-After this first neutral zone we will do 3 more laps before our one and only planned "hard-stop" at the feedzone (at just about 50 miles, 8:30am). You'll have a minute to change/refill bottles before we get going again.

-All other bottles/hydration will be on the fly, and you can drop bottles in the 2nd pullout (the drop zone). Make sure they clear the road/bike-lane!

-4 more laps and we should be done! Everyone is responsible for their own garmins and whether they got to 100 or not…provided I make it, I will create a Sonoran100 segment in Strava which will hopefully capture everyone's efforts.

The Sub-5 hour group plan

As above, but participants should come up with their own rules for the feed and neutral zones, and their departure time from Apache Wash will be 6:15am! Other groups can leave as they wish.

Some Pace-line guidance:

-1 minute (or less) pulls.

-try not to surge during your pull. You should gradually pull ahead of the person pulling off.

-try not to freewheel or do anything that will cause everyone behind you to have to suddenly adjust their speeds. Energy wasted on these adjustments (especially mental) is energy not going to the pedals.

-try not to half-wheel, particularly the lead rider who could pull off unexpectedly into your wheel.

-to pull off left, check to make sure there are no vehicles (even if someone says "clear") and steadily move left and back while the group comes through.

-to pull off right, double pump your left elbow and steadily remain far right while the group comes through.

-if we have a strong cross headwind, it is strongly advised that you pull off into the direction of the wind, both to shield those coming through from the wind, and to avoid the 2nd wheel, who is probably cheating a little to the other side (but not half-wheeling!) to hide from the wind.
